Here's another little tidbit of herpes knowledge to add to your growing collection – a less-publicised way that herpes is commonly spread is through non-sexual skin-to-skin contact, particularly in high-contact sports such as wrestling, American football, and rugby (hence the sportsmanesque term, herpes gladiatorum).

In this well-known case, scientists examined a high-school wrestling camp and found that amongst the athletes with HSV, each weight category had spread a slightly different strain within their respective groups, proving that the wrestling had been the primary cause of infection.

As with any type of herpes, outbreaks can be treated or prevented with antiviral meds, and people suffering from outbreaks should bench themselves until they've cleared up.

This is something else to keep in mind the next time someone tries to use a case of herpes as some kind of at-home infidelity test. HSV can come from many different kinds of contact!
