Promising New Topical Cold Sore Remedy in Development

A US company called NanoBio is teaming up with pharm giant GlaxoSmithKline (aka makers of Abreva and Valtrex) to develop a new, topical remedy for cold sores, with "significant antimicrobial activity against the virus that causes cold sores." The best news? It's also over the counter, meaning cold sore sufferers will have another affordable option at the drug store without having to get a prescription (which is especially helpful if you're a first time sufferer trying to nip an outbreak in the bud!).

The new compound is currently known under the name NB-001, but we'll let you know as soon as the company releases the name it will be sold under.

Phase II clinical trials have already been completed with "clear" signs of effectiveness, and researchers will be moving onto Phase III soon. It will be available first in the US and Canada, but no word yet on exactly when this new cream will be sold to the public.
