Reader Q - Can You Get Herpes from Someone's Sweat?

Question:
My friend has genital herpes and we were wrestling around and I touched his underarm which was sweaty. Can I get herpes from that? I am really freaking out... I washed my hands with antibacterial soap. How soon can I get tested for it?

Answer:
It's very unlikely that your friend had a herpes outbreak on his armpit area. Usually, people only get genital herpes outbreaks around the pelvic area, and even then, it only usually spreads that far because of skin to skin contact around the area, or because they are touching their own lesions and then another part of their body (but even that is rare).

And the herpes virus is not at ALL carried by people's fluids - that includes sweat, urine, and even semen! (although if you're close enough to semen, you're probably pretty close to their genitals, too). So you have nothing to fear and I don't even think it's necessary for you to get tested at all, unless you appear to be showing signs of a herpes outbreak on your hand. If for some crazy reason your friend had herpes in his armpit, only your hand would get it, not your genitals because your genitals didn't touch the herpes!

But it's probably a good idea to wash your hands after touching someone's sweaty armpit anyway :)
