Antibiotics for Mono
My 13 yr old granddaughter had a consistent discharge from one of her eyes. The Dr. said she was allergic to her new kitten and treated her with some eye antibotics. The eye got a little better but she then got a sore throat, the same Dr. checked her for Strep and it came back negative, but she prescribed antibiotics anyway. My granddaughter had no energy, she is high energy all the time all she did was lay around and the sore throat did not go away. Finally, my daughter-in-law took her to the emergency room where they tested her for Mono, the test was negative, but the on call physician prescribed another regiment of antibiotics while stating he was sure it was Mono. DUHHHH! I am so mad because I had Mono in my twenties and studied a lot about it and went on your site and refreshed my knowledge and I know antibiotics are not any good for Mono. Now, I am worried that the antibotics will have an adverse effect on her ability to recover as quickly as she might have. Her throat is even worse, swelled and pus pockets and her strength is just gone. She was to start school this week and her mom has kept her out for this week. What else can we do? Her mom and dad are at the end of their rope and I hate to preach to them about just accepting medication as being the only way. What can I do to encourage them? A concerned grandmother who loves her granddaughter very much.
Thre is no treatment for Mononucleosis
Hi Kolanda,
You are of course absolutely right, antibiotics will not cure Mononucleosis. I don't know why some doctors seem to think that antibiotics is some kind of wonder drug that will cure everything. If you take antibiotics everytime you're ill, one day it just won't work when you really need it, because you develop tolerance to it.
As to how you can help your granddaughter and her parents, well, just tell them that it will take as long as it takes and that it's not a life threatening disease. Your granddaughter will recover quicker if she gets planty of rest - make sure she takes it easy for a few months after as well as her immune defence system will be weak and she is more likeliy to catch other things, like the flu or a cold.
And get the parents to educate themselves like you did! satrt by referring them to our Mononucleosis FAQ.
Kind regards,
iv
