mononucleosis

I am 40 and have just been diagnosed with mono.yesterday. My symptoms are sore throat and fever. I'm wondering if I could have gotton it from my new boyfriend of three months. He is upset with my diagnosis, but wants to take an EBV test if he needs to. He has a teenage daughter and doesn't want to pass it on to her. Thanks, worried

Epstein Barr Reactivation

It IS possible for an adult to contract mono! I had it 24 years ago at the age of 35, and was sick for 5 months. It finally "went away", and I had no further problems until 2008. At the age of 58 it "reactivated"; I had the same symptoms all over again! I also developed chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. In the last 5 years I have had 6 surgeries - shoulder, foot, hands, nothing really major. I also had a job change. I see a
specialist who is located 3 hours away from me (on a good day when the freeways aren't packed) because no doctor in my immediate area could tell me what was wrong with me. I did not know that the following can impact your immune system:
- anasthesia (surgical)
- opiates such as vicodin which I have taken for a back injury
for the last 5 years

Stress, I know about. Well, with my minor surgeries involving anasthesia and stress from a job change, my immune system crashed.
I have struggled with a reactivation of Epstein Barr for over a year.
I had to have shoulder surgery May '09 and that set off the EBV,
again. The only positive thing about an EBV reactivation is that you
can't pass it on like the original infection!

I have learned a lot in my EBV reactivation journey; feel free to
contact me.

Herpes caused Mono?

I was recently diagnosed w/herpes, still not sure which one. However, I had a "chancre sore" on my tongue (and a sore throat w/swollen glands). My boyfriend (at the time) kissed me on the lips while I had the sore and now he has Mono. His "doctor" says the mono was probably caused by MY herpes, being that mono is in the herpes family. I'm no doctor, but that really sounds like a bunch of bunk to me. I'm of the mindset that although they may be related, one is caused by the EBVirus and the other by the HSVirus. I'm thinking the only way HE could get EBV is if I already had EBV.

Can someone PLEASE clarify.

Hey guys, I caught mono like

Hey guys,

I caught mono like most people when I was a kid. Didn't suffer for long (luckily) but every winter I have another run in strep throat and swollen glands. I think it's just a mild form of mono, or EBV coming back to get me! LOL

And so I wanted to share this website...

I've used this stuff for a few weeks and haven't noticed my glands getting any bigger, or any symptoms like they would normally appear. So I guess it's working. Hope this helps someone else too!

Well met, good luck and get better!

Two Mono replies

Hi both posters,

"... chances are I already have the virus or I got it during the incubation period correct?"

Yes, either you have already had Mononucleosis or you are quite likely to have caught it from your girlfriend.

"... my ex-wife had mono as a teenager. Is it possible she gave it to me and >then I gave it now to my fiancee?"

Yes, that is a likely scenario. But your fiancee could also have caught it from someone else and you could have caught it from someone else.

"... Will this alter her cycle in any way?"

A woman's menstrual cyclus can be affected by many things, quite often by stress and illness. Your girlfriend's cyclus will probably be back to normal when she has completely recovered which can take months.

girlfriend's period

my girlfriend has mono and we are active sexually. she said she had her period for like a week and a half when she was in the first stages of mono. Will this alter her cycle in any way? she is scared that her period is comming longer than usual... is it because of her week and a half period?

Mono

My fiancee was just diagnosed with mono. She is 22 and I'm 29. Of course we had been kissing all the way up until she had the first symptoms. Since it is most contagiious during the incubation period, are we safe to kiss still. I mean chances are I already have the virus or I got it during the incubation period correct?

Also, my ex-wife had mono as a teenager. Is it possible she gave it to me and then I gave it now to my fiancee? It sounds like an outside shot, but I was just curious.

Thanks,
JB

2. Time Mononucleosis

Hi,

Well, it's not that common to get Mononucleosis twice, but we see more and more of it.

Did your boyfriend get tested for Mononuclosis when he first had it? I think he should go back to the doctor and insist on gettting a proper test to see if it actually is Mononucleosis. It could just be a bad case of the flu.

You should also have a test, as you might have had it already. If you have had it, it doesn't matter if you kiss your boyfriend as the virus stays in your body for life.

Mononucleosis is common in teenagers but it is possible to get it at any point in life. Read more in our Mononucleosis FAQ.

boyfriend with mono again????

Friday my boyfriend had swollen glands, no fever, and not much fatigue, by Sunday morning he vomited and felt like he was swallowing razor blades. For 2 days he vomited twice a day and had a fever of 102.9. His tonsils are large and covered with white spots and has a VERY touchy gag reflex, he tried to gargle salt water and vomited immediately. He went to the doctor and was diagnosed with strep throat without a throat culture. He had mono a year and a half ago and now the doctor thinks he may have it again. I kissed him while his glands were swollen, but no fever was present. Is it possible for me to get mono from that and also is it possible for him to get mono again??? If he does have it again when is it safe to kiss him. I am 20 and he is 22, aren't we too old for mono?
