Herpes Treatment: Penciclovir
Penciclovir is an antiviral agent used to treat Oral Herpes. It is
available in a cream, Denavir,
manufactured by Novartis.
Denavir is available with a prescription from your doctor. Denavir
was the first available episodic treatment for Oral Herpes in USA.
Penciclovir is only used to treat Oral Herpes because it is
poorly absorbed orally. Instead, the prodrug of Penciclovir, Famciclovir,
is used to treat other types of Herpes. Famiclovir will convert to
Penciclovir in the body which is then able to acts as an antiviral agent.
Penciclovir works by inhibiting the DNA synthesis of Herpes. That means
that Penciclovir will prevent the Herpes virus from reproducing which is
the main reason that the virus activates and causes outbreaks as well as
shedding contagious virus. Penciclovir can not cure Oral Herpes but
it can fight it and keep the activation to a minimum, ie Penciclovir
helps keep the virus latent. Penciclovir stays in the body for longer than
Acyclovir which means you don't have to use it so often. This will in
the long run mean that you are less likely to develop resistance to
Penciclovir.
If you have Oral Herpes, Penciclovir/Denavir might be the right
treatment for you. Talk to your doctor about a prescription for
Denavir or another antiviral agent.
