How Long Can Herpes lay dormant?

I would really appreciate your advice/opinion with my problem.
After 24 years of being in what I thought was a faithful/perfect marriage
I had my first outbreak of herpes 1 in the genital area.
I have never been with anyone but my husband. Although he was with plenty of girls
before I met him. He has now tested positive for oral herpes.
My BIG question is how long can this lay dormant?
Is there any way at all that he had caught it before our marriage and not pass it
to me for over 24 years?
He swears he has never cheated on me. I just can't believe it though.
It eats away at me every single day. I have gone to 2 Dr.s and asked them.
They just tell me to go home and have a long talk with my husband.
We have 2 grown son's and I don't want to tear our family apart.
But this is tearing me apart every day.

Dormancy period
Dear Vicki,
You are in a very difficult situation and I do feel for you.
Although unlikely, Herpes can lay dormant for a very long time. I myself have a cold sore but I have had no outbreaks for 10 years.
I have no idea if the Herpes came from you or your husband in the first place and unfortunately there are no methods available to find out.
I suggest that you get in touch with your local Herpes Hotline. I would love to refer you, but I don't know where you live. Look in the yellow pages or ring an std clicic, they'll know.

Just found out
I didnt know I had this..I just found out because I got some sores on glutes. I have no idea who I contracted it from and I have been in a relationship with someone for over 4 years. I will have to break it up because it breaks my heart to tell him. I dont know what to do..please advice.

My wife of 16 years just came down with genital herpes. I have had cold sores in the past on my mouth, but have avoided contact during the half dozen outbreaks I have had during our marriage. She is convinced that I have been recently unfailthful and this is absolutely not the case. She is prone to such beliefs anyways and it is driving me crazy that I can't prove to her that I did not have contact with someone during our marriage. This is just such a cruel turn of events. I feel like I'm trapped in some strange nightmare. I have read on this board and other places that it can lie undected for years. I may have genital herpes and not know it, I have not noticed any sores or other symptoms other than the cold sores on my mouth. I will be seeing a doctor asap, but I suspect that nothing I tell her will change her mind. I love her more than anything and don't know how to prove to her that I have not strayed. We have 5 kids, she wants to split, and I'm scared as h*** at what is going to happen...
if anyone has any ideas about how to deal with this please tell me...
