Mononucleosis: What Treatments are Available?
Yes, but they will only relieve the symptoms and possibly
speed up recovery, they will not cure Mononucleosis.
There
is no cure for Mononucleosis, it will go away on its own which
can take weeks or sometimes months. You should see a doctor
for diagnosis and further advice, but don't expect to get
any prescription medicine.
This is what you can do yourself:
- Get plenty of sleep and rest
- Get plenty of liquids
- Use fever reducing medications
- Use pain killers
This will help your body fight Mononucleosis and speed up
recovery. You should be very careful with exercise, heavy lifting
and alcohol for weeks or months after Mononucleosis as your spleen
and liver will probably have expanded are are very fragile.
After Mononucleosis you are immune to catching it again and also to
further outbreaks. This is because the Epstein-Barr virus that caused
Mononucleosis will stay in your body along with the antibodies that
your body produced to fight the infection. There is a small risk that
you pass on the virus, especially in the first months afterwards. The
Epstein-Barr virus is contagious via saliva, which in effect means
kissing, sharing food and drink etc.
