Mononucleosis: Should You See a Doctor?
Yes, you should see a doctor for diagnosis and advice. The diagnosis
wil be determined with a blood test.
If you're a teenager and you have flu like symptoms, feel very tired
and this lasts for more than a week or two, you may have
Mononucleosis. Mononucleosis is not a teenage-disease, but the symptoms
of Mononucleosis are strongest in teenagers.
Lots of children and babies
get Mononucleosis, but at such a young age the symptoms are very mild
and are often not diagnosed.
Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus which is part of the Herpes group of viruses. It is contagious via saliva and a typical way of getting it is
via kissing, sneezing or sharing food or drink. The incubation period
lasts from 10 to 60 days which is when the virus is mostly contagious.
Once you've had Mononucleosis, you don't get it again. The Epstein-Barr
virus will stay in your body along with the antibodies that your body
produced to fight Mononucleosis. Epstein-Barr is not very contagious
after Mononucleosis.
There is no cure for Mononucleosis. It will pass on its own and there
are usually no serious complications if you follow your doctors advice.
You should get plenty of rest and sleep during the illness. For a few
weeks or months after you should avoid physical exercise including
lifting heavy objects and also avoid alcohol. Your spleen and liver
will expand (which makes them fragile) during Mononucleosis and it will
take a while before they are back to normal.
