Virally speaking there are two types of Herpes, Type 1 & 2.
Traditionally, Type 1 has been associated with Oral Herpes and Type 2 with Genital. However, this is NOT true! You can have either type at almost any part of your body. Lips, nose, eyes, ears, genitals, anus & fingers are locations that have been assigned names. I've even heard of a wrestler with an outbreak on his back!
The difference is in the RNA of the virus. Other than that, HSV-2 appears to affect people in a more severe manner than HSV-1. Additionally, people with HSV-2 contract HSV-1 at a lesser rate, while people with HSV-1 contract HSV-2 at a normal rates.
The difference between cold sores and chancre sores is that cold sores are caused by the Herpes virus, while Chancre sores have no known cause (may be viral, stress, genetics, nutritional definciency, etc related). Also, herpes is contagious while chancre sores are not known to be.
