Keratitis: How Common is Eye Herpes?
There are about 500,000 people in the US with a history of
Herpetic eye disease. Herpes is a very common family of viruses,
and most people carry some sort of Herpes virus in them for
life.
The severity of Keratitis outbreaks vary greatly. In some
people Keratitis is harmless and may go away on its own and
is therefore never diagnosed, and in other people it may need
treatment, lead to scarring of the cornea, loss of vision or even
blindness. It is very important to see a doctor if you think you
may have Herpes Keratitis.
If you do have Herpes Keratitis, you doctor will prescribe
antiviral eye drops, ointment or in some cases orally administered
antiviral tablets. He may also gently scrape off infected or dead cells to
help recovery.
Herpes Keratitis usually only has one or two outbreaks in
a person's lifespan.
