Two Different Diagnoses? What do I have?!

My doctor diagnosed a rash on my neck as some form of herpes, I'm not sure what, and said I probably got it from a classmate's cold sore. This stuck me as bizarre; the only person who had been anywhere near my neck was a boyfriend, and he hasn't had a cold sore of any kind in his entire life.

I used zovitrax (zovitrex?) like my doctor told me. There were red bumps that looked like mosquito bites right in the middle of my neck (pretty much smack dab in the middle, not really on either side). They slowly got smaller and went away, sort of bleeding themselves out. They went away after two-three weeks. At no point did they hurt or itch, except when pressure was applied.

I went back this time... and she said they were shingles! But it didn't seem like shingles at all.

Where the blister/rash/whatever things were, they left scars.

What did I have? How do I get rid of the scars?

Hmmm...

No clue what it could have been, but Mederma is great for scars. It reduces the appearance, doesn't make them completely go away. Band-Aid and Neosporin make their own scar ointments as well.

Geez, that was kind of like a commerical. Sorry. lol.

Shingles is a skin rash

Shingles is a skin rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus responsible for these conditions is called Varicella zoster. After an individual has chickenpox, this virus lives in the nerves and is never fully cleared from the body. Under certain circumstances, such as emotional stress, immune deficiency (from AIDS or chemotherapy) or with cancer, the virus re-activates causing shingles. In most cases, however, a cause for the reactivation of the virus is never found. The herpes virus that causes shingles and chicken pox is not the same as the herpes virus that causes genital herpes (which can be sexually transmitted) and herpes mouth sores. Shingles is medically termed Herpes zoster.
