both partners infected

We are 46 and 50 f/m respectively. Both have just experienced an apparent herpes outbreak. Both believed we were herpes free prior, guess one or both of us was wrong. Louise seems to be experiencing systemic outbreak whereas he is experiencing a fairly nonintrusive outbreak. We are wondering what we should do. Should we go to the doctor and get a formal diagnosis? Home test? Do we have unprotected sex during or after an outbreak? Help.
