Herpes from tanning bed?

I recently went to the doctor for a rash on my buttock, he told me herpes, but he cant say for sure since the rash was healing. I never get mucus or puss or pain.. It itches and only bleeds after I itched it. The only thing I can think of is that I got it from a tanning bed. There is no pain.. but scabs which I think i caused from itching it to much.. Does this sound like Herpes? and since i didnt contract it sexually.. can it be spread through intercourse???
