Herpes Treatment: Virox - New Drug to Expand Distribution in US
CARSON CITY, NV, June 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sonic Media Corp. (SMED.OB) today announced broad new retail and wholesale distribution in the U.S. for Virox, a series of products designed to treat all types of herpes and other viral infections naturally through use of a plant extract derived from the desert shrub Larrea tridentata. Virox products are manufactured by LarreaRX, Inc., utilizing Virastatin(TM), a proprietary extract of the plant that is supplied exclusively by recently acquired Sonic Media subsidiary Global Botanics, Inc.
BioGenesis Nutraceuticals, the largest distributor of complementary and alternative medicine in the U.S. with over 5,000 customers, has signed an agreement to distribute Virox products to health care practitioners across the country, as well as to sub-distribute the products to three other U.S. distribution companies specializing in the complementary and alternative market. In addition, Ozark Co-op and Rainbow Natural Foods have been added to the list of regional distributors representing Virox products.
New retail distribution agreements have been reached with Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottage, High Health and a number of independent health food stores.
Virox products are also distributed through Tree of Life, United Natural Foods Incorporated and Select Nutrition in the U.S., and through Puresource Inc., and Asenda Pharmaceuticals in Canada. They are currently available at the retail level from Akin's, Chamberlin's and other health food retailers in the U.S., and from Safeway, London Drugs, Save-On Foods, Whole Foods, Thrifty Foods and independent health food stores in Canada.
The Virox product line currently consists of a dietary supplement, a cold sore lotion and a penetrating spray for the treatment of multiple herpes conditions. Over 90% of the world population carries at least one herpes virus. Some type of herpes virus will affect nearly everyone at some time in his or her life.
The Virastatin used in Virox is the only patented, natural product on the market targeting herpes as an antiviral treatment. It carries four U.S. patents covering methods of extracting the resin from the Larrea tridentata plant as well as the use of the extracts for treating human herpes viruses, symptomatic herpes lesions and inflammatory disease conditions.
Virastatin has undergone 18 years of research and development, including nearly eight years of informal consumer testing with more than 3,500 users. Open, multi-center studies of oral and topical Virastatin conducted in 1996 indicate an overall 97.8% success rate in healing genital herpes and shingles lesions in otherwise healthy patients. The products have also shown tremendous success in treating those individuals with complications of herpes virus and whose immune systems were compromised due to AIDS. No adverse effects were reported from those non-controlled clinical studies, company-sponsored and independent in vitro and in vivo animal studies, or consumer use reports.
LarreaRX has licensed Virastatin for use in its Virox products under a non-exclusive agreement with Sonic Media's Global Botanics subsidiary. Sonic recently announced that it has signed a letter of intent to also acquire LarreaRX, Inc. Sonic is actively pursuing additional licensees in the nutriceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
