viral shedding

Does anybody have information on the viral shedding stage of genital herpes? I was unaware that I could pass it on without an outbreak...therefore I did not worry about it if I wasn't having a reaction. Since I have only had 5 outbreaks in 7 years, this was not a concern to me.
What I'd like to know more about is if there is any research done to have an educated guess on how often the virus replenishes itself (viral shedding). If that is what it is, one should be able to avoid contact during this time.

Mica, My understanding about it is...I had my first outbreak ( trying to think) it happen when I was very stressed ( fighting w/ the ex at the time) and we broke up, cause I found out he was cheating....any way I've notice a pump ( which I just thought was an bug bit) on my butt check and it was a little sure but I didn't think anything of it...it heal and left a scare, but I scare easy...anyway about 1month after we broke up I went and got tested( I have to state that I get tested every 6mths) so I got tested before I met him and I was neg w/ all my test even HIV and STD's. but after we broke up and I got tested my test came back pos for Herpes...I asked my doc of she can give my info on the std so I can educate myself and on think I notice on the picture she show me was a picture of the scare I had on my butt which I thought was a bug bit..and I told my doc and she said that it most likely I had an outbreak and I didn't know it....I did read online that if you do get or have shedding you should not touch nor have sex and you should not use the same towels/washclothes...wash them in hot water..plus if you like to sleep in the nude ( which most people like to do) change your sheets. I was with the understanding that when the virus is in its viral shedding stage, that there is no blister's/bumps/open wounds etc. Basically just an internal process of it manifesting itself?!? Any comments????
