Likely hood of contracting from a positive partner?

Hi,
A very basic question that i hope doesnt seem too foolish or insensitive...

I have become involved with a wonderful girl who has had genital herpes for 5 years.
She has been good enough to tell me which i obviously appreciate but it has left me rather unsure of the practicalities.

We have now been together 4 months and we have yet to have sex (seriously) and its become an issue on both of our parts.
She has a real problem relaxing or initiating anything amorous as she feels that she is going to hurt me.
I am very sure about her but less sure of the potential risks and consequences.

My question to you really is three fold:

1- If you are having regular safe sex, oral sex, kissing etc what are the chances of contracting herpes?

2- Is genital herpes the end of it if contracted or can/does this mean you are likely to to develop herpes in other ares of the body?

3- If there are any men here who have genital herpes can you shed any light on its effects on you, your relationships and your state of mind?

I appreciate any replies

My husband has had GHerpes

My husband has had GHerpes for over 3 years and has had 2 outbreaks. He had cold sores growing up, Herpes 1 so he had a certain amount of immunity to the virus already. If you have had cold sores in the past, and hardly get reccurances, Iwould day you would not have a problem with it. If you haven't then I have no idea to how it would be for you. I got outbreak after outbreak, acyclovir totally eliminates breakouts for me, but I also do not think being on it the whole rest of my life is the best idea.
