Recurring Shingles
I am a 56 year old woman who had had recurring shingles since 1986. The 1st time it just went away (it was on my left buttock, right in the middle and about the size of a 50 cent piece, I do remember feeling like I had the flu. For about four years they would show up once or twice a year, always about the same size. I went to the doctor and he explained that I had shingles and gave me Acyclovir which worked fine this time and the next, then it quit working for me, so he put me on Zovirax. Same thing happened worked great twice then stopped working. I have taken every herpes drug out there over the years now nothing at all works. About six years ago they changed (I call it morphing), became smaller, more spread out and more often and with more vessicals, about every 2 - 2 1/2 months. As if that was not enough, about four years ago they changed again to once a month. The blisters stayed in the same general area (left buttock) until a year ago. I began getting them on my head, in my nose, around my eye in my mouth and ear and they were smaller, but the pain was even more excruciating. I spend most of my time getting ready to break out, flu like, headaches or with PHN. I know they have morphed to my insides. After all these years you just know that it is not this or that, it is simply the dang shingles raising cane on my body until they decide where to pop out. Try explaining how painful PHN is to someone, yeah right, they look at you like, well you look fine to me. Last June I lost my job of 11 years due to this problem (I missed 37 days in 6 months). What could I say!? Now it is constant headaches and pain, sometimes drives me to thinking crazy thoughts. I actually pray for blisters to have a couple of days just a little less overwhelming. I've tried Lyrica, oh hell you name I have tried it and I end up back on lortab 7.5 3-4 times a day. When it hits my insides sometimes I have to take 2 otherwise I am in a fetal position for a couple of hours. I also take Robaxan 3 times a day as I have cervacalgia also.
This is supposed to be my prime of life and I am having symptoms of an 80 year old. I worry it will morph into my brain and goodbye mama. I do take Valium3 tomes a day as after all these years I am so anxious.
Does anyone have any ideas? My doctors are just amazed, one said" you would make a great study" and my reply was " I thought I already was, what the hell have you been doing for 2 years". No offense to any pain doctors out there, but I am tired of being the lab rat!
Thanks for letting me vent!!
The once upon a time fun Betty Street.

recurring shingles
Thank you for the feed back. I tried accupuncture and the first time was great! The second time threw me into the worst shingles outbreak I ever had and the oain went over the roof. So now I am a little shy to try again. Although it helps my husbands neuropathy that he has had for about 6 years (not diabetic related).
chinese medicine
hmm, acupuncture can do this, as it can re-activate the Ch'i energy in the body, western terms, re-activate the nerves, i asked about Chinese med to see if anyone had any inexperiences with it, i learnt to diploma level Chinese med and Chi Kung healing in 1990 because i heard the soft side of kung fu e.g meditation and Chinese med can help heal H. true to be at ease with ones- self will help, but for me living in the small town I live in is not easy. time to move lol.there is a herbal formula that may help, it is called Gentiana Combination ( in chinese long dan xie gan tang) in chinese med it ": drains fire excess from the liver and gallbladder and clears and drains damp- heat from the lower burner) damp- heat means herpes, thrush etc and the like in western)lower burner means the lower part of the torso, e.g below the belly button.the main emotion that goes with the liver is anger, frustration and life not flowing smoothly,( when people drink to much alcohol they tend to want to fight and be aggressive as this affects the liver). The main emotion that goes with gall bladder is decision making, in Chinese med it says anything to do with the genitals is in the realm of the kidneys and the main emotion of the kidneys is fear and paranoia.if anyone would like the herbal names in the above formula , please ask.i have tried chinese med, herbs , homeopathic, qxci, and other therapy's,but so far no banana, but thats not to say these wont work for other people.
recurring shingles
I had shingles in my early 20's on my lower back - the doctor wouldn't prescribe anything so I contacted the Hale Clinic in London where they have a natural pharmacy and I got some 'Herp-eze' (think it has L-Lysine in it, an amino acid which helps to heal and fight the virus which causes shingles). Worked really well. I also found a book called 'Prescription for nuritional healing' which has detailed advice. Acupuncture can take a while to really work so may be worth trying a few sessions. If you haven't tried it, reflexology is great for pain relief.
I have the same problem
I am 33 years old and have been getting shingles for almost 10 years!! The breakout is always on my right butt cheek and hip area.I have been through the whole "your not old enough to have shingles" thing and tests as well. I have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue, which they try to chalk up to the cause..but heres the REAL kicker,we dont ever remember me having the Chicken pox. That doesnt mean I never did we just dont remember it. I dont want to get to the point to where it spreads all over my body,I have been given alot of diff. meds and they work for me for a bit,but then quit working and none want to give me Valuims or pain meds...like I just want pills or something,so I suffer pretty well. I am a CNA for the elderly and disabled in home so you'd think that they would give me a little more help than what Im given. Since Im extremely contageous to the elderly and have to miss ALOT of work and cant afford too either. I cant afford and health insurance anymore, and the local health dept. is a joke..unless you have STDs youre pretty much out of luck,so now I suffer through the shingles EVERY month with no meds. at all! And cant find any kind of help for anything. However if I quit my job,I could get some help but with children its out of the question, and my husband still would be working so we'd STILL be over the income allowance for medicaid or other help as well. If anyone has any advice, please feel free to drop it on me..its ALL welcome!
