Initial outbreak

I was wondering how long someone can have herpes before they get an outbreak? I recently contracted it but havent found "my" source. No one will admit to it. But to a point i can understand that. No one wants to live with this. Ive done some research on this and all that i have read has been similar. That your primary outbreak happens about 2 weeks after contact. Is this true or could i have had it for awhile and just got my first really bad outbreak? I need this information for myself and for my girlfriend. Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

I'll try and help

I believe that there isn't a 'set' time for outbreak, that it can be inactive for a long time. I am in this predicament myself, as at the moment I am suffering my first outbreak. My current boyfriend got checked and does not have Herpes. That means I was infected with it seven months ago and did not have an outbreak until now.

I hope this helps.
ps: I believe that when it is triggered and becomes active, it takes within 2 weeks to show the symptoms.
