Herpes during my period, Help.

This is the first outbreak of Herpes and I dont know about a few things.

Is it okay for me to use tampons when I have an outbreak of Genital Herpes? Will I spread the infection? I would rather use tampons as it makes it easier to clean the area, but I'll stop if it will spread the disease inside me.

Should I put some of the cream or gentian violet on the tampon just in case, or is it not advisable to use it inside?
