mononucleosis

I am 40 and have just been diagnosed with mono.yesterday. My symptoms are sore throat and fever. I'm wondering if I could have gotton it from my new boyfriend of three months. He is upset with my diagnosis, but wants to take an EBV test if he needs to. He has a teenage daughter and doesn't want to pass it on to her. Thanks, worried

Source of Mononucleosis

Well, it is possible that you caught Mononucleosis from your boyfriend, but as he hasn't had any symptoms it isn't that likely. Mononucleosis is mostly contagious just before the outbreak. It's more likely that you caught it from someone else, maybe a young relative?

Most people who don't get Mononucleosis in their teens have already had it in childhood. When children get mononucleosis, the symptoms are very mild and flulike and are usually diagnosed as the flu. By the time we reach adulthood most of us have had Mononucleosis.

Are you sure you have Mononucleosis? Did you take the EBV test? The reason I ask is that it is not that common to catch Mononucleosis after the teen years.

Your boyfriend should see a doctor if he's worried, even if it's unlikely that he hasn't already had Mononucleosis a long time ago which would mean that he isn't very likely to pass it on to his daughter.

Remember, you only get Mononucleosis once.

EBV Test

Yes, I took the EBV test yesterday and should have the results tomorrow. My flu test and strep were both negative. My glands are swollen but I do not feel tired at all. How long is the incubation period for an adult? Will the test tell me if I've been carrying this dormant for a long time? My boyfriend thinks I've been kissing someone else but I haven't. I photograph children for a living and I wipe a LOT of runny noses! Still, I think it is odd that I may have mono at 40.

Mononucleosis 2

Well, I'll cross my fingers and hope you don't have Mononucleosis ;)

I'm surprised you are not tired at all, as this is a typical symptom, usually one of the first.

As far as I'm aware, the test won't tell you how long the virus has been in your body, only that it is present in your body

It seems likely that you have caught Mononucleosis (or whatever it is) from one of the children you photograph.

Tell your boyfriend that you don't have to kiss someone to catch Mononucleosis - when I had it in my early teen years I had never been kissed by a boy ;) You only need skin contact.

I agree with you that it is odd that you catch Mononucleosis at 40, but it's not unheard of.

Please report back with the result of your test!

mononucleosis

My boyfriend just got a blood test back, and he showed up positive for mono. Im afraid that i might get it. I don't know how contagious it is but what are the vaginal side effects?

and also how dangerous is it

and also how dangerous is it for the vagina if it was infected with mono? Or is that possible?

Mononucleosis - A Herpes Virus

Hi,

Sorry to hear that your boyfriend tested positive for Mononucleosis. Does he have it in outbreak or does he just have the virus in his system? The reason I ask is that if he has the virus, but has already had Mononucleosis in outbreak, possibly years ago, he is not that likely to pass it on to you.

Also, have you had Mononucleosis? Have you been tested? The reason I ask is that you only get Mononucleosis once.

There are no vaginal side effects form Mononucleosis. It is not an STD, although it is a member of the Herpes virus family.

You should have a look at our Mononucleosis FAQ, you'll probably find a lot of info on Mononucleosis that might help you.

Mono

Mono - once - got it.

My son's girlfriend is wanting to come and stay with us because her roommate was diagnoised earlier this week with mono. My problem with this is that my 92 year old grandmother lives with us and she does not remember ever having mono. My grandmother was currently hospitalized where she received 3 pints of blood due to an undetermined blood loss/diagnoised as severe anemia.(Severe anemia is just the lastest in a series of other health problems for a 92 year old body as you can imagine.) I guess what I am asking is could mono possibly be life threating to my grandmother due to her age and current health problems? Thank You!

How to Catch Mono

Hi,

It is most likely that your grandmother has had Mononucleosis at some point in her life, most people have. If caught in childhood, Mononucleosis has very mild symptoms and is rarely diagnosed. It is usually believed to be a case of the flu. Those who don't get Mononucleosis in childhood get it in later life, usually in the teen years. Read more about Mononucleosis and teenagers here.

This would explain why your grandmother wouldn't remember ever having Mononucleosis. On the other hand, it is of course also entirely likely that she has never had it.

Another point to consider is whether your son's girlfriend actually risks passing Mononucleosis on to your grandmother at all. Chances are that she had Mononucleosis already, maybe as a child, as she hasn't caught it yet from her room mate. Mononucleosis is mostly contagious in the incubation period. Read more about catching Mononucleosis here.

But you should really ask your doctor about this.
