Choraphor's Claim to eliminate herpes
I have just recently been diagnosed with HSV. I am also travelling in forein country. This means my medication for outbreaks can cost up to $200. I am searching for alternatives to Valtrex. One that sounds promising is a topical creme called Choraphor which claims to eliminate herpies in one application or severly reduce reacurance. Have you heard of any such studies to support this. Is this creme heard of by anyone?

Hi,
Officially there is no cure for Herpes, but the makers of Choraphor claim that their product can cure it, which makes me a little suspicious. Choraphor is not a prescription drug, I'm not even sure you can get it in regular pharmacies, which also makes me doubt the effects.
Are you looking for Valtrex alternatives because of the cost? You should be able to get a generic - and cheaper - make of the same drug, but you'll probably need a prescription regardless. Do you not have medical travel insurance?
You haven't stated what kind of HSV you have, oral or genital, which makes it difficult for me to advise you. Also, I don't know what country you're in, which makes it even more difficult.
Please write back with more info, then I might be able to advise you better.

Chorophor & cost affective alternatives to valtrex
Thankyou for your reply. I have HSV 2 genitally and contracted the virus on holiday in Whistler, Canada. I only have emergency travel insurance and specifically does not cover claims related to pregnancy or STD's. I have been lucky though, i had a few outbreaks in the first enitial month but nothing since my last entry to herpes doctor and i think that it is on the count of good diet and vitamins and not thinking about it. I used to suffer from eczema and i think it kind works the same way - if you think you are going to get it you will!
The hardest thing for me was having sex with my boyfriend. He was really good about it but i could not bring myself to have sex in fear that i was one big toxic germ waiting to infect him and devistate him like the virus had me. Once i got over that my emotions settled and fingers crossed i am ok for now.
I believe you may have information reguarding cost alternatives for Valtrex???

Cost alternatives to Valtrex
Thanks! iv for your reply. I contracted Genital HSV 2. I am in British Columbia Canada. My travel insurance does not cover pregnancy or STD's. Luckily i have not had another outbreak since my last entry to Herpes doctor. I had outbreak after outbreak in the enitial months of contracting it. Apart from the stress of the recent news i had just begun a new relationship and after telling my boyfriend (who was amazingly understanding) could not bring myself to have intercourse. Fearing that i was one big infectious germ about to infect him with all the hurt and devisistation that comes with contracting the Virus. He helped me uderstand and change my outdated views on Herpes and i feel happy and clean and can enjoy a healthy sex life again. I have lots of vitamin C, B and iron daily and and Spuralina to drinks to aid my immune system.
I keep some Valtrex at home in case i sense something. I am confused however on how much to take now. Enitial outbreaks i believe you take 4 per day for 10 days. But if you out break again a few months later you take 3 or 4 and thats it? One doctor told me 2 and was angry at the suggestion of taking more as my friend does on her out breaks where she continues Valtrex till it goes away.
I dont want to take more than i have to and if you have cost alternatives i would love to hear from you.
KInd Regards,
Jess
Antiviral Medication Brands
Hi,
I am glad to hear that you are getting support from your boyfriend! Genital Herpes is a lot easier to cope with if you have support and understanding from your loved ones, and knowledge certainly helps as well. Your general well-being - and that includes mental health - has a lot to say in keeping Genital Herpes latent.
I don't actually know what alternatives to Valtrex you can get in British Columbia! But there must be generic brands, and you can find out from your doctor or ask at the pharmacy.
In regards to how much Valtrex you should take, you should follow the advice that the doctor who prescribed this medication gave you. Do not self-administer! If you think that you the results are poor, go back to the doctor and see if he will change the prescription.
Kind regards,
iv
BC'er been there, done that...
Generic acyclovir is available in BC. Sure, you must take it five times a day. If money is the concern, this is the solution.

natural herpes treatment
Spirulina (brands that use spray drying, but not freeze drying method), 1-1/2 teaspoon a day, with 15 mg zinc a day will keep you completely clear of herpes as long as you keep taking it.

In response to medicine issues
Um.. I am WAY different than apparently everyone else on this site. I have had genital herpes for 11 years now, and have NEVER taken any meds for it. Sounds like the way people around here describe an outbreak on meds (if you are breaking out anyways what is the point?) the breakouts last the same amount of time as natural/unmedicated breakouts. Those drugs also all warn that you can still transmit the disease when on the meds (same as when off).
As for the sex issue, this is another one that I seem to be a little strange about: TAKE A WEEK OFF!!!! I know, crazy talk there, and sometimes it really can suck to have that big romantic date or first time seeing each other again after weeks apart have a no sex clause but, suprisingly enough, obstaining for a week WILL NOT RESULT IN UNTIMELY DEATH! You will survive! And if your relationship has a little more to it than just sex, your relationship will ALSO survive. If you have to worry that your lover will "dump" you if you don't "put out" for a week, maybe you should get some counseling, or some self esteem.
By the way, as for anyone reading this and thinking I am some sort of cold fish in the intamacy department, I have actually taken physchological test where I tested hypersexual, and rather high up on the charts. The tests were not like the movie arcade, they were actually by a physocholigist. For those of you who do not know what hypersexual means, it is referred to as nymphism in females and don-juanism in males. If I can obstain a week without going insane, folks with a regular sex drive should too. (And yes this "physcological disorder" is usually caused by abuse during childhood and is actually legit and IS NOT the same as promiscuous (SP?))
As for the pain and discomfort of the disease, it isn't permanent. I had a breakout every month for the first year year, the next few years I had one every three or four months (usually around midterms and finals in college), the last few years I have one or two a year (usually around funerals and employer changes) and eventually it will be one every few years (judging by what older people I know with it who are not pill poopers have told me). I know one person who has been in remission over ten years, another who gets a breakout about every 4 years, no meds for either one. When you have an outbreak, take care of it, keep it clean and get air on it: it lasts less time than a menstrual bleeding/period.
It is completely possible to have this disease without being a pill popper, and sometimes the chances you take with the meds can cause worse side effects/more problems than the originals disease/ailment. Do you really want to chance taking some "miracle drug" that may result in kidney/liver/heart failure? To avoid a blister?

Fantastic for you!!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds fantastic, but please don't assume that everyone has it as easy as you!! I have had this debilitating disease for 9 years know. I used to get outbreaks on average 1 a month. This, however, has not lasted. I am now forced to take antivirals every day as I could no longer cope with the pain of herpes. I get outbreaks of both genital and oral varieties. It also manifests itself as sever head aches and dizzines. My outbreaks pretty much start as soon as one is finished. I am never free of this.
I live in fear everyday of spreading it to my two children, little girls aged one and three. My husband has now after the six years we've been together started getting it on his chin.
Eventhough I take acyclovir twice a day as a preventative I still have more or less continuous outbreaks. The difference is that the pain in my thighs and legs is a bit subdued and that the blisters don't fully blister, but then that could be due to the vectavir cream that I apply. But if antivirals even just reduce the chance of passing herpes to my girls slightly, then I guess it is worth any health side effect.
The problems with my head now are so regular and severe that I am absolutely desperate to find something to help without compromising liver/other organs. Help!!!!!!!!!! Am now considering trying Choraphor, having heared a lot of negative things about dmso, health wise.
So, still think that it is possible for everyone to live with herpes without becoming a pill popper? (I should add that I take vitamins, try not to stress, eat very healty food, mainly organic, take exercise etc.)
I would love to hear from anyone else with sever problems or anyone with advice as to what to do now!
Love, Karin (don't know how much more I can take)
i'm in the same boat
had it for 4 yrs. and it's getting worse, not better. i eat well (also mostly organic, take vitamins, and exercise, too). i am taking valtrex preventatively, but it's not preventing anything. it used to work for me, but i now have a child (1/2) and do not get enough sleep or any time to relax. don't know if it is this, or if i have developed resistance to the drug. i just know that i am miserable. i get very sickly (flu-like symptoms) during an o/b. i also don't know how much more i can take. it is impairing my ability to be a good mother as i am just too tired and sick to give my baby the attention she needs. i am also scared of transmitting to my child. i don't even use my fingers to put diaper cream on her, everything is more complicated. when i get out of the shower, she wants to touch my leg (she recently learned the word and is very excited about it) and i can't let her because i get the rash on my thighs now, too. i feel terrible telling her not to touch mommy. it causes more stress worrrying about her getting it,and as we all know, it is quite the vicous cycle.
Karin, i'm sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time, i really relate. and thank you for putting that obnoxious "anti-pill popper" in their place. did your problems become worse after your children?
