Genital Herpes: Should You see a Doctor?
Yes, you should see a doctor. Genital Herpes is often
misdiagnosed because the symptoms may vary but self diagnosis is not a
sensible option.
Genital Herpes is caused by the virus Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV2) and sometimes HSV1 which usually causes Oral Herpes / cold sores. HSV2 is mainly transmitted via sexual activity which includes not only traditional intercourse but any sexual activity that involves the genitals. If you have Genital Herpes and you receive oral sex, your partner risks getting Oral Herpes and if you have Oral Herpes and give oral sex, your partner risks getting Genital Herpes.
Common Symptoms of Genital Herpes
The symptoms of Genital Herpes are a rash that turns into blisters which then turn into a dry scab. These symptoms may vary or be very mild. They may also occur anywhere between the knees and waist, not just on the genitals.
Once you've caught HSV2, it stays in your body for life but may remain latent for years before you experience an outbreak of Genital Herpes. In this period you risk (unknowingly) giving it to your partner because the virus, even without any prior outbreaks, will have a viral shedding period which is when the virus reproduces itself. The virus is highly contagious during this period.
When you start experiencing outbreaks, the first time is usually the worst and there can be great variations in the symptoms from person to person. The frequency of outbreaks will also vary depending on the individual, ranging from once in a lifetime to several times a month.
Treatment Options and Preventative Care for Genital Herpes
Genital Herpes can't be cured but you can treat the outbreaks with good results. Your doctor will prescribe an antiviral agent in tablet form containing either:
- Acyclovir
- Valacyclovir
- Famciclovir
The antiviral agent will help reduce frequency, duration and severity of outbreaks as well as reduce the risk of spreading the virus. For some people, taking the antiviral treatment may even eliminate further outbreaks.
If you have Genital herpes, you must take precaution to avoid spreading the virus. When you have an outbreak you should:
- Take antiviral treatment
- Avoid sexual activity
- Avoid touching the affected area
- Wash your hands regularly
- Do not share clothes, towels or wash cloths
A low immune defense system seems to be a major trigger of
outbreaks
To keep outbreaks at a minimum you should keep your immune defense
system boosted:
- Maintain a healthy diet
- Ensure you are getting enough sleep
- Follow a good daily exercise regime
- Avoid stressful situations whenever possible
Don't despair. It is estimated that 1 in 5 adults have HSV2. It is perfectly possible to lead a normal life.
You should start by SEEING YOUR DOCTOR.

I have genital herpes and currently have an outbreak, I am also doing an IVF cycle, can this have an effect on my outcome? Also I read somewhere that genital herpes can also effect the falopian tubes, and my problem why I cant get pregnant is my falopian tube is semi blocked, do you think contributes to it?
