Genital Herpes: How do You Avoid Outbreaks?

It is difficult to avoid outbreaks of Genital Herpes. Genital
Herpes is caused by the virus Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV2) and sometimes Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV1). Once you've caught this virus, it stays in your body
for life but remains latent most of the time. The trick is to keep it
latent but that is easier said than done.

Viruses thrive on a low immune defense system, which can be
caused by:

  • Tiredness
  • Stress
  • Illness

Leading a healthy lifestyle will help keep outbreaks to a minimum

  • Take regular exercise
  • Follow a healthy eating plan
  • Ensure you get enough sleep
  • Avoid prolonged stressful situations

If you suspect you have Genital Herpes, you should see a
doctor for diagnosis
. You doctor may also prescribe an
antiviral medicine in tablet form. The main types are:

  • Famciclovir
  • Valacyclovir or
  • Acyclovir

Your doctor will decide which treatment is best suited for
you but you may have to try several to find the most effective treatment for you.

These antiviral agents will not cure Genital Herpes but they
will reduce the frequency, duration and severity of outbreaks as
well as reduce the risk of spreading. In some cases they may even
eliminate the outbreaks altogether.

Take Precautions to Avoid Spreading Genital Herpes

If you have Genital Herpes you must take precaution to
avoid passing it on to others. Unfortunately the virus is not only
contagious when there is an outbreak, it is also contagious
just before an outbreak and in the viral shedding period where
the virus reproduces itself without symptoms.

As the worst thing the virus will cause is the
visible symptoms and is in no way life threatening you are not
expected to refrain from sexual activity for life, although this
is the most common way the virus spreads. You are expected
to tell your partner, even if there is no outbreak, and you must
take precautions when you do have an outbreak:

  • Do not engage in sexual activity, including oral sex
  • Do not touch the affected area
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Use antiviral treatment

You should be perfectly able to lead a normal life. Genital
Herpes is a very common condition and most sufferers manage to
live happy lives by minimizing their outbreaks and taking care. You should start by SEEING YOUR DOCTOR.
