HSV-2 and Meningitis
My boyfriend of 17 months has recently been taken to hospital with Meningitis. The doctors have just confirmed he has Herpes Simplex virus 2 which caused his Meningitis. Although he has no visivle blsiters or sores. As far as I am aware I do not have HSV-2 although I am going to be tested shortly. How is it possible for him to have contracted this and become so poorly?

Herpes causing Meningitis
Hi,
Meningitis means inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord and Herpes viruses can cause viral Meningitis, but the illness is not usually serious.
There are actually many types of Meningitis and I suggest you read about it yourself.
I also suggest you talk to the doctor about Meningitis when you have the HSV-2 test.
Seeing that your boyfriend had no symptoms of HSV-2, we don't know if it would manifest as Oral Herpes (cold sores) or Genital Herpes. The most common is Genital Herpes, an STD, so if this is the case, your boyfriend would have gotten it via sexual activity. Genital Herpes can be latent for a very long time, so there is no reason to assume that your boyfriend has been unfaithful to you. He could also have gotten it from you. Read more on our Genital Herpes FAQ.
Kind regards,
