Can babies get mono? Infectious mononucleosis in children

Can babies get mono?
I have a 10 month old who gets into everything despite our attempts to keep him out of our other child's way and off his things.

My 6 year old child was just diagnosed with mono after a bout of strep throat that he had seemed to recover from after 10 days of antibiotics. After going through another round of stronger antibiotics thid past week and no change in his health the pediatrician said he had the classic signs of mono. After a steroid shot this Sat. he seems to feel somewhat better as long as he doesn't overexert himself. As he is somewhat asthmatic, the swollen tonsils have aggravated his illness and we've had to use a nebulizer to help him.

Now the baby has developed a cough and I am concerned that he will pick up or has already caught this awful disease from his brother. The 6 year old has had more of the teenage type symptoms and has really suffered...

Please help! Can my baby get this and if so, what can I do for him? I had been told that babies rarely catch this...

Thanks!

Mononucleosis and babies

Hi Aisling,

Unfortunately babies can get Mononucleosis, but they usually have a very mild version, a bit like the flu. It is quite likely that your baby will catch it from his brother and there is not much you can do to prevent it.

Read more in our Mononucleosis FAQ.

Kind regards,

iv
