New friend with Herpes

I have recently met a wonderful woman who has told me she has GH.
I have a few questions; ok, many. She is taking Valtrex most of the time.

Can I perform oral sex on her, absent of breakout, and be safe?
Can she perform oral sex on me, absent of breakout, and be safe?
Can she masturbate me, absent of breakout, and be safe?
Can I masturbate her, ..... , .... , and be safe?

Obviously, a condom is needed at all times during intercourse. Am I right?

Are there other intimate or sexual things I can do without putting myself at risk?

The more I read about this, the more it makes me wonder why no one has invented some type of protective wear for a non-infected partner. Or is there something out there
I can wear and be protected?

Sorry for my naivete' on this subject, but I am anxious to learn so I can enjoy
a relationship with this woman

If you don't mind, can you tell me how she told you? What about it scared you, what didn't? Why are you willing to pursue a reliationship with her given the facts? Also, how old are you? We get more and more questions from people who are involved with Herpes sufferers, and it's so nice to see that at least some people aren't so easily scared ;) And I'm glad to hear that she told you sooner rather than later.

You can't give your girlfriend oral sex or have "traditional" intercourse without being at risk. The risk is greatest if she has an outbreak very low outside outbreak periods, but it is there. She can give you oral sex with no risk. You can both masturbate eachother with no risk.

Condoms and Valtrex are a must. You can also use a dental dam when you give your girlfriend oral sex, that works a bit like a condom. Search online, it's not hard to get hold of. They work very well if you use them correct.

acyclovir vs. valtrex

can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two drugs - effectiveness, side-effects, costs, and long term study results?
also most effective condom on the market would be what?

Drug types and brands

Acyclovir is a type of drug and Valtrex is a brand of drug. Valtrex contains Valacyclovir. You can read about Valacyclovir in our Valaciclovir section. and about Acyclovir in our Acyclovir section.

There are benefits to both drugs, but it really depends on the nature of your outbreaks. Your doctor will decide what is best for you.
