Transmission of cold sore - how fast?

ok.. so i just started an outbreak this morning of a small bump on my lower lip.. i've had cold sores my whole life, so it's nothing i'm not used to.. but my boyfriend kissed me today before i could really say anything.. so what are the chances that the virus was spread to him??? please help, i'd hate to be the reason that he would have to deal with this too..
