Chickenpox: How do You Stop it Itching?

The chickenpox blisters can indeed be very itchy and even painful.
There are a number of thing you can do to relieve this:

  • Lukewarm baths
  • Aloe Vera gel or similar
  • Local anesthetic cream
  • Antihistamine (normal allergy tablets, avaliable from
pharmacies without a prescription but please ask before you buy!)
  • Wear loose cotton clothing, no synthetics
  • Do not get too warm and sweaty
  • Make sure you are properly hydrated, and avoid sugary drinks
  • Drink plenty of plain water

The blisters are usually followed by fever, headaches and tiredness.
It's fine to take painkillers (not aspirin) and fever reducing
medicines.

If the Symptoms Persist

If symptoms persist for more than 4 days, you should see a doctor.
Chickenpox is usually fairly harmless in childhood, but occassionally
there are severe cases. An antiviral agent such as Acyclovir or
Famciclovir may be prescribed. This will help reduce the severity
and duration although it will not cure chickenpox. Your body will
produce antibodies to fight the virus Varicella Herpes Zoster, which
causes chickenpox, but in some cases a little help is required in
the form of antiviral agents.
