Chickenpox: Will it Leave Scars?

Chickenpox itself does not leave scars, it is the itching and
scratching that can leave scars. Whether you will have scars or
not after having chickenpox depends on how severe the outbreak is
and how well you handle it.

Chickenpox is not usually treated unless it is very severe or
is experienced in adulthood. If so, the antiviral agent Acyclovir
or Famciclovir may be prescribed. This will reduce the severity
and duration of chickenpox. A normal outbreak of chickenpox usually
goes away on its own. To prevent scarring and easing the symptoms,
the following is recommended:

  • Fever reducing medications
  • Pain killers
  • Local anesthetic cream
  • Lukewarm baths

There is also a vaccine for chickenpox. It will not eliminate the
risk of chickenpox but it will reduce it considerably and if you
do get chickenpox, it will be very mild and the risk of scars will
therefore be reduced. The vaccine is not required for children but is
recommended, especially for adults who didn't have chickenpox in
childhood as it can be quite severe if experienced in
adulthood.

scars

chicken pox does leave scars even if you don't scratch. My daugter recently recovered from chicken pox and she didn't scratch, but still has a few scars where the deepest and largest pox were. The remark about scarring on this forum is therefore incorrect.
