Cytomegalovirus: How do You Avoid Catching it?

It is quite difficult to avoid catching Cytomegalovirus as it is spread via bodily fluids such as saliva, blood, urine, tears, semen, breast milk etc. It would mean no intimate, physical contact with other people.

Once you've caught Cytomegalovirus it remains in your body permanently along with the antibodies your body
produced to fight the virus and keep it latent. This means that in principle you can pass it on to other people at all times once you've got it.

There is no cure for Cytomegalovirus but in most cases there is no need to treat it as it does not cause any symptoms or illnesses of any kind in otherwise healthy people. There is no particular reason to prevent catching it if you are in good health. Most people have it by the age of 40, usually without knowing it.

In immunocompromised patients such as AIDS patients abd organ transplant patients Cytomegalovirus may cause great damage such as other illnesses like Hepatitis.

Women who do not already have Cytomegalovirus run a small but serious risk if they catch it when they are pregnant. 1 to 3% of women who do not already have Cytomegalovirus wil catch it during pregnancy and 45% of the babies will be born with Cytomeaglovirus which can cause serious damage such as hearing and visual impairment and brain damage. If the child catches Cytomegalovirus after birth, there is usually no risk, and Cytomegalovirus is not dangerous to the pregnant women themselves.

Virus can be simly washed off with soap and water and if you do belong to these risk groups, you should keep good hygiene to avoid catching Cytomegalovirus. If you do catch it, antiviral treatment wil be prescribed.
