Cytomegalovirus: Can You Catch it More than Once?
No. You can't catch Cytomegalovirus more than once because there is no cure for it. Once you've caught Cytomegalovirus, it stays in your body permanently along with the antibodies your body produced to fight the virus and keep it latent.
Cytomegalovirus is very common and by the age of
40 most people have it. There are usually no symptoms, illnesses or conditions connected with the virus if you are in good health, so there is really no need for a cure.
Cytomegalovirus is contagious via bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, tears, urine, semen, breast milk etc and requires intimate, physical contact to spread. The only way to avoid catching Cytomegalovirus is to avoid physical contact with other people, but as the virus is usually
harmless, this is not recommended. It is mostly contagious in the incubation period of 3 to 4 weeks and a couple of months after.
Some people, mainly immunocompromised patients and pregnant women, risk complications if they haven't already got Cytomegalovirus and catch it. However very few people haven't already got it so even for pregnant women and immunocompromised patients the risk is minimal.
