Hospital Misdiagnoses Woman with HIV, Herpes, & Hepatitis

A U.S. woman is suing a hospital after they misdiagnosed her with HIV, herpes, and hepatitis last year.

Upon learning that she had somehow contracted these diseases, the woman lashed out at her husband, suspecting infidelity, which almost destroyed their 37-year-old marriage. She even considered suicide.

Treatment Success for Immunocompromised Herpes Patients

The BioAlliance Pharma trial for acyclovir Lauriad just reported positive results from its phase III of testing. The trial treated immunocompromised patients (for example, people with HIV) who suffer from recurrent bouts of oral herpes, or cold sores.

Researchers found that just a single dose of the acyclovir Lauriad tablet reduced the duration of the outbreak, and delayed the time until the next outbreak occurred.

Stem Cell Research Could Lead to Herpes Cure

Blood stem cells may someday be engineered to form cells that can fight off viruses such as HIV and Herpes, say scientists at the UCLA AIDS Institute in California.

The cells that normally fight infections are called T-cells, but those with compromised immune systems lack the number of T-cells needed to fight HIV. Researchers believe that this immune system repair technique will someday be used to cure a number of chronic diseases, such as herpes, HPV, and hepatitis.

Instant STI test to come to BC

Some good local news for residents of British Columbia, Canada – The province has hired BioLytical Laboratories to develop a combined, instant STI test that involves just a finger prick and will tell the user in 60 seconds if they test positive for HIV, herpes, or syphilis. The best part is, the kit doesn't have to go back to a laboratory.

The new testing kits should be ready to go public by late 2011.

Another Company Enters Race for the Herpes Vaccine

A Swiss-based American company called Mymetics recently announced their search for a number of viral vaccines, which would help prevent HIV, Influenza, and Herpes Simplex Virus. Their team of scientists is focusing on a technology called virosomes to deliver antigens that can prevent the infection from taking hold.
