Blood stem cells may someday be engineered to form cells that can fight off viruses such as HIV and Herpes, say scientists at the UCLA AIDS Institute in California.
The cells that normally fight infections are called T-cells, but those with compromised immune systems lack the number of T-cells needed to fight HIV. Researchers believe that this immune system repair technique will someday be used to cure a number of chronic diseases, such as herpes, HPV, and hepatitis.
